Multimedia Game “Create Your Own Coat of Arms”

Multimedia Installations

As part of the exhibition “Coins and Knights. Silver and Steel”, a multimedia game was created that invites visitors to immerse themselves in the world of medieval symbolism and heraldry.

Using a touch screen, visitors can design their own coat of arms by selecting its key elements step by step: the shape and color of the shield, the central figure, the crest, the supporters, and the motto. Each stage is accompanied by visually expressive imagery inspired by medieval tradition.

The game is based on the principles of historical heraldry, in which every element carries meaning. Animals and mythological creatures symbolize personal qualities and virtues; the colors and shapes of the shield reflect status and character; and the motto serves as a concise expression of one’s life credo.

In this way, the interactive experience is not only engaging but also educational, helping visitors understand how coats of arms were used in the Middle Ages to tell stories about knights, noble families, and cities.

All illustrations for the game were created by hand and executed in the style of drolleries—a distinctive medieval decorative manner known from manuscript marginalia, bestiaries, and heraldic scrolls. With its fantastical creatures, expressive forms, and subtle irony, this style naturally combines historical authenticity with imaginative freedom, giving the game a vivid and atmospheric visual language.

Once the coat of arms is complete, visitors receive a finished image that can be downloaded via a QR code directly from the screen and saved to a mobile device as a digital souvenir of their visit. In this way, the interactive experience continues beyond the museum space, turning personal engagement with history into a tangible result.

The multimedia game “Create Your Own Coat of Arms” enhances the exhibition “Coins and Knights. Silver and Steel” by bringing together historical knowledge, artistic tradition, and modern digital technology. It invites visitors not only to observe but to participate—briefly stepping into the role of a medieval herald.
